What to Know About the Aikido Uniform and Weaponry
A lightweight Judo Gi in white cotton is the standard uniform at Shin-Gane Aikido and many other dojos. If you’re shopping for a new uniform, be sure to choose a gi that is both comfortable and tough enough to hold up during training. Once you have purchased a gi, it should last you a long time.
If you’re serious about practicing aikido, you’ll eventually want to purchase a hakama. This is the skirt-like pants – a traditional piece of Samurai clothing – worn most often by Aikidoka. You’ll notice that Sensei Mike wears a black hakama during training.
When it comes to weapons, there are several that advanced aikido practitioners use. At Shin-Gane, we begin with the bokken. This is a wooden version of a Samurai Sword. Our bokken is made from white oak, which is light, flexible, and strong.
If you’re interested in other types of aikido weaponry, you may want to purchase a Jo staff. Some of our practitioners also use a heavy-duty carrying case for their weapons.
We’re happy to answer any questions you have about aikido gear! Just let one of our sensei know.
