We’re excited to offer karate instruction to our students on Tuesday evenings, led by Sensei Conway Wong. If you haven’t had the privilege of meeting Mr. Wong, be sure to stop by! We’re proud to welcome him as part of the Shin-Gane family.
A Karate Practitioner for Over 30 Years
Conway Wong grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and began practicing karate at age 12. Mr. Wong studied with a number of highly-respected martial artists, including Grandmaster Robert A. Trias of the Trias International Institute of Karate and Judo, Master Milt Calander and Master Tony Bisanz in Arizona, and Master Eliot Freeman at Three Rivers Aikido here in St. Louis. He’s very thankful to all of his instructors, who have truly altered his life. Now, over 30 years later, he feels privileged to teach karate at both his own dojo, Shuri-Ryu Karate of St. Louis, and at Shin-Gane.
Having trained with Sensei Mike for nearly 10 years, Sensei Wong has a great deal of respect for Shin-Gane. When presented with the opportunity to teach at our dojo, he jumped at the chance. He welcomes students on Tuesday nights, providing basic instruction from 6:00 to 7:00 pm and intermediate instruction from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Anyone is welcome, regardless of experience.
What to Expect at a Shin-Gane Karate Class
When students come to a class, they can expect to learn authentic karate from an award-winning instructor, as well as self-discipline and respect for others. Sensei Wong holds memberships with the United States Karate Alliance (USKA), the International Shuri-Ryu Association (ISA), the Shuri-te Bujutsu-Kai, and the Gospel Martial Arts Union (GMAU). He believes in teaching the history and philosophy of karate, as well as the physical techniques.
Unlike aikido, karate instruction focuses on striking and kicking. Sensei Wong also brings in aspects of judo as he teaches practical self-defense methods. Like many martial arts instructors, Mr. Wong appreciates different areas of expertise and blends aikido techniques and others into his martial arts practice.
Visit Shin-Gane to Learn More and Meet Sensei Wong
At Shin-Gane, you won’t just learn a few by-the-book self-defense techniques. Sensei Wong believes that the benefits of karate are both mental and physical. You’ll get a good workout, but you’ll also get clarity of mind. Sensei Wong encourages his students to explore different self-defense scenarios and use free-form techniques. He’ll be happy to introduce his practice, get to know you, and give you more information about why the practices of karate and aikido may be perfect for you.
